چکیده

Metamaterials and photonic/phononic crystals have been successfully developed in recent years to achieve advanced wave manipulation control, both electromagnetism mechanics. However, the underlying concepts are yet be fully applied field of fluid dynamics water waves. Here, we present an example interaction surface gravity waves with a mechanical metamaterial, i.e. periodic underwater oscillating resonators. In particular, study device composed by array submerged harmonic oscillators whose objective is absorb energy dissipate it inside form heat. The performed using state art direct numerical simulation Navier-Stokes equation its two-dimensional free boundary moving bodies. We use Volume Fluid interface technique for tracking Immersed Boundary method fluid-structure interaction. first monochromatic single oscillator then add up four resonators coupled only fluid-mechanically. efficiency terms total dissipation find that adding resonators, increases non trivial way. As expected, large attenuation achieved when characterised similar frequencies. number increased, range attenuated frequencies also increases. concept results presented herein relevance applications coastal protection.

Engineered surface waves in hyperbolic metamaterials.

We analyzed surface-wave propagation that takes place at the boundary between a semi-infinite dielectric and a multilayered metamaterial, the latter with indefinite permittivity and cut normally to the layers. Known hyperbolization of the dispersion curve is discussed within distinct spectral regimes, including the role of the surrounding material. Hybridization of surface waves enable tighter ...

Experiments on seismic metamaterials: molding surface waves.

Materials engineered at the micro- and nanometer scales have had a tremendous and lasting impact in photonics and phononics. At much larger scales, natural soils civil engineered at decimeter to meter scales may interact with seismic waves when the global properties of the medium are modified, or alternatively thanks to a seismic metamaterial constituted of a mesh of vertical empty inclusions b...

Observation of star-shaped surface gravity waves.

We report a new type of standing gravity wave of large amplitude, having alternatively the shape of a star and of a polygon. This wave is observed by means of a laboratory experiment by vertically vibrating a tank. The symmetry of the star (i.e., the number of branches) is independent of the container form and size, and can be changed according to the amplitude and frequency of the vibration. W...

The instability of periodic surface gravity waves

Euler’s equations describe the dynamics of gravity waves on the surface of an ideal fluid with arbitrary depth. In this paper, we discuss the stability of periodic travelling wave solutions to the full set of nonlinear equations via a non-local formulation of the water wave problem, modified from that of Ablowitz, Fokas & Musslimani (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 562, 2006, p. 313), restricted to a one-...

Traveling Waves in Deep Water with Gravity and Surface Tension

This paper is concerned with the simulation of periodic traveling deep-water freesurface water waves under the influence of gravity and surface tension in two and three dimensions. A variety of techniques is utilized, including the numerical simulation of a weakly nonlinear model, explicit solutions of low-order perturbation theories, and the direct numerical simulation of the full water wave e...
